KEEP KITS BEACH WILD
This Facebook group was started in the summer of 2012 by long time Kitsilano resident and filmmaker Elvira Lount to stop the Vancouver Park Board from extending the seawall from Kitsilano Yacht Club along the wild quiet part of Kits beach to Jericho - the "Point Grey Foreshore", one of the last natural beaches in Vancouver. So far we have been successful in our efforts to stop the seawall but we must remain forever vigilant.

SAVE KITS BEACH
The mandate of the Keep Kits Beach Wild group has expanded to include the protection of all of Kits Beach from Jericho to Vanier Park. The group has joined in the efforts of the Save Kits Beach Coalition, formed in October 2013, to stop the construction of a 12 ft paved bike path through the middle of Kits Beach and Hadden Parks, rendering the little remaining green space in those parks unusable as a playground, family picnic area and space for quiet contemplation.
After months of protest and the filing of a lawsuit in regards to Hadden Park (see below), the Park Board finally backed off this ill conceived plan and on February 17, 2014 announced that they would not be pursuing the bike lane through Kits Beach and Hadden Parks. Once again we must remain vigilant.

HADDEN PARK DEFENCE LEAGUE
The land on which Hadden Park sits was bequeathed to the city by Mr. Harvey Hadden in 1928, with the stipulation that Vancouver City and Park Board “shall keep the property as near as possible in its present state of nature... it being the desire of the Grantor, that those using the park, shall, as far as reasonably be, enjoy the same in its natural state and condition.”
A lawsuit was filed in the BC Supreme Court in Nov 2013 and an injunction obtained to halt the construction of the bike path through Hadden Park. The court case was scheduled to be heard March 12 & 13, 2014.
In response to the lawsuit and the public protest, the Park Board finally backed off this ill conceived plan and on February 18, 2014 announced that they would not be pursuing the bike lane through Kits Beach and Hadden Parks. Once again we must remain vigilant.

THE COVID EFFECT ON OUTDOOR NOISE NOVEMBER 21, 2020
The documentary THE COVID EFFECT ON OUTDOOR NOISE explores both the positive and negative effects of Covid-19 on outdoor and natural soundscapes in the Kitsilano area of Vancouver, in the form of a video essay and commentary. All the sound in the video is ambient sound, illustrating the Covid soundscape. Shot during the pandemic on an iPhone 8 by Vancouver filmmaker and activist Elvira Lount, between March 12, 2020 and October 31, 2020, while on her outdoor runs and walks in her neighbourhood of Kitsilano and Point Grey. Edited by Elvira Lount in iMovie. Story editor Laurence Keane. Presented to the Right To Quiet Society for Soundscape Awareness and Protection at their AGM on November 21, 2PM.
PROTECT THE WILDLIFE HABITAT AT VANIER PARK DUCK PONDS FROM A BYOB GARDEN
SIGN THE PETITION: Protect our Quiet Natural Wild Spaces at Vanier Park + Kits Beach From BYOB Gardens.
On July 27, 2020, the "Alcohol in our Parks Pilot Program" was approved by the Vancouver Park Board Commissioners and included designated BYOB zones in 22 parks. The Vanier Park designated area map is below. It includes and SURROUNDs THE 2 DUCK PONDS, in spite of them being home to teeming wildlife including beavers, ducks, geese and many birds who roam that area. This is their territory and habitat. Putting a legal drinking zone here would be a travesty and goes against everything the Park Board stands for. They should be protecting our natural quiet wild areas, not destroying them! Why does drinking in our parks takes precedence over protecting our green space, quiet spaces and wildlife? Soon after this meeting I started a petition asking the Park Board to reconsider the Vanier Park location as well as the quiet old grove of trees at Kits Beach, where people go to escape the craziness of the crowded main beach and suggested an alternative location in already crowded and noisier area of Kits Beach where people already drink.
WILDLIFE NEED WATER TOO
Aug 16, 2023: The ponds at Jericho Beach Park are nearing a crisis point. This east pond is almost dried out. Only a small section of west pond still has enough water. What happens to the wildlife there if that dries out too? The Vancouver Park Board claims that the ponds are a "seasonal wetland" and part of our "biodiversity" strategy, so they can't add water. Yet, Jericho Ponds were human made in 1976. They also say that as Metro Vancouver is experiencing drought conditions and we're at Stage 2 water restrictions, they can't "waste" drinking water by adding water. But, wildlife need water too! Please help save our wildlife. Email the Park Board and ask them to add water to Jericho Ponds as well as Vanier Park ponds, which are also almost dried out, and other crucial wildlife ponds in Vancouver, including those at Charleson Park, South Memorial Park and Queen Elizabeth Park.
